By Nabil Ramia

Dominican Republic, the half island that have a great part of the occidental world talking and visiting it. The country is known for its postcard-worthy beaches, energetic music, tobacco, plentiful rum and very kind people, so it’s easy to see why so many tourists are flocking to its shores.

Because of this, Dominican Republic is, since the las decade, the preferred tropical destination of the world in the Caribbean, and in more recent years, also the preferred one in Latin America. This have fueled to the top the development of many cities to receive more and more tourist each year; and of course, this includes the real estate industry and market.

The data shown on the image reflects for 2022 the recurrence of travelers/tourists of each continent to the island and how it is divided between the airports of the country.

Here we can see that there are two main cities and airports that received most of the tourists with 78% of all the landings in the country, which translates to more than 5 million tourists (non residents of DR) to this two cities, being those Punta Cana and Santo Domingo. These two airports also receive the most arrivals by different cities, being more than 200 cities around the world that make arrivals to both airports, being these divided by continent as follows:

  • 60% of arrivals to Dominican Republic come from North America and the Caribbean;

  • 33% of arrivals to Dominican Republic from Europe;

  • And almost 10% from South America and

But, is important to have clarified that, for the airports of Santo Domingo and Punta Cana, the tourists are very different from each other, and this is because the main tourist that goes to Santo Domingo for example, is a tourists that have the purpose of work/job and medical, while the one that arrives to Punta Cana is mainly for leisure. So here you have two very different non residents types of people who come to the country, giving it much more versatility to the country as a whole.

This last specification gives you also an idea of what to expect to find in each city and how to invest in this to example cities (Santo Domingo and Punta Cana).

For the date of this blog, 25 September 2022, Dominican Republic have already surpassed the 5 millions tourists entries to the country.
